Topic: Doxycycline 100mg for Dogs - Dosage and Side Effects

Posted by: DogLover89

Hi everyone! I just got a new puppy from the shelter. He’s doing great, but he has some skin issues that the vet prescribed doxycycline 100 mg to treat. Can someone please share more about this? How often should I give it to him and what are potential side effects?

Hello DogLover89! It’s great you’re seeking advice on how to care for your new puppy. Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic often used in dogs to treat various bacterial infections, including skin conditions.

For doxycycline 100 mg tablets, the typical dose is usually around 5-6 mg per kg (about 2.3-2.7 mg per pound) twice daily. So, if your puppy weighs 10 kg (roughly 22 lbs), you’d give about half a tablet (50mg) two times a day.

However, it’s crucial to follow the prescription given by your vet, as they know the specific condition and weight of your dog better than anyone else. Also, make sure to complete the full course even if your puppy seems better before finishing all the medication.

Thanks so much, VetAssistant! That helps a lot. What about side effects? Should I be worried?

Good question, DogLover89. Doxycycline is generally well-tolerated in dogs, but there can be some side effects to watch out for:

  1. Gastrointestinal issues: This includes vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite.
  2. Skin reactions: Sometimes dogs may develop rashes or hives.
  3. Liver and kidney toxicity: While rare, this is a potential risk with long-term use.

If your puppy experiences any severe side effects like difficulty breathing, collapse, or persistent vomiting/diarrhea, contact the vet immediately. It’s also important to ensure that doxycycline is given on an empty stomach, as food can reduce its absorption and effectiveness.

Hi DogLover89! I’ve had experience with my doggy taking doxycycline for skin infections. The vet gave her 50 mg twice daily, which worked wonders. She did have a bit of tummy upset at first, but it settled down after a couple of days.

I’d recommend giving the medication about an hour before meals to avoid any stomach issues. Also, make sure you give water along with the pill; doxycycline can sometimes cause irritation in the esophagus if not properly washed down.

Thank you so much for your insights, HappyPaws! That’s really helpful to know. I’ll definitely keep those tips in mind and ensure my puppy takes his medicine on an empty stomach with plenty of water.

One more thing—how long should I expect the treatment to last? The vet mentioned a week or two but didn’t specify.

Hello DogLover89! Typically, the duration of doxycycline therapy depends on what it’s being used for and how well your puppy responds. For skin infections, a course might be 10-21 days. However, it’s crucial to follow up with your vet if you haven’t already done so.

Some conditions may require longer treatment periods to prevent recurrence. The vet will likely schedule a follow-up appointment to evaluate the progress and determine if any additional treatments or further medication is needed.

Absolutely! DogLover89, it’s always best to stick with your vet's prescribed duration. They’ll do their own assessments to make sure everything is healing properly. If there are no signs of improvement after the initial course, they might recommend a longer treatment period or adjust the dosage.
