Forum Topic: Dog Itching Prednisone - Advice Needed
Post by: PetLover89 (12/30/2021 3:45 PM)
Hi everyone! I hope you can help me. My dog has been really itchy lately, and the vet prescribed her some prednisone to calm down the inflammation and itching. It seems to be working, but I'm a bit worried about side effects. Any advice or experiences with this? Thanks!

Hi PetLover89! Prednisone is often used for dogs that have severe itching, allergies, or inflammatory conditions because it can be quite effective at reducing inflammation and providing relief. It’s important to follow your vet's instructions closely regarding the dosage and duration of treatment.
Side effects are possible with any medication, but they vary from dog to dog. Common side effects include increased thirst, urination, and appetite. Some dogs might also experience lethargy or behavioral changes. If these symptoms become severe or if you notice anything unusual like vomiting or diarrhea, it’s crucial to contact your vet right away.
Have you noticed any of these symptoms in your dog? How has the prednisone been working for her overall?

Hi DrDogs, thanks so much for your response! My dog seems to drink a lot more water than usual and is peeing more frequently. Her appetite has also increased slightly. Other than that, she's acting normally and the itching has definitely improved.
I'm just worried about long-term use because we're not sure what’s causing the itching yet. The vet said it could be an environmental allergen or something in her food.
What do you think? Should I start looking into other treatments or just stick with the prednisone for now?

Hi PetLover89, it sounds like your dog is experiencing some of the common side effects associated with prednisone. Increased thirst and urination are typical but can be managed as long as they aren’t excessive or accompanied by other concerning symptoms.
For long-term management, especially if the underlying cause isn't clear yet, it’s important to work closely with your vet on a comprehensive treatment plan. Sometimes, addressing the root cause through dietary changes (like trying an elimination diet), environmental modifications (such as removing potential allergens from her environment), or using other medications alongside prednisone can be helpful.
In some cases, your vet might suggest switching to a lower dose of prednisone or using it intermittently rather than continuously. They may also recommend additional therapies like antihistamines, essential fatty acid supplements (omega-3 and omega-6), or even allergy testing if the itching persists despite these measures.
It would be wise to schedule another visit with your vet to discuss long-term management options once you've seen how well she responds to the current dosage. This way, you can ensure her comfort while minimizing potential side effects from prolonged prednisone use.
Keep us updated on how things are going!
